Maria Hawkins pedaled her way to international road cycling success and the 1992 Summer Olympics |
From her home base in Banff, Maria Hawkins pedaled her way to international athletic success. She was a member of the Canadian National Road Cycling Team for four years, from 1989 –1992.
Maria was a member of Team Canada at two World Championships, in 1990 and 1991. She really made her mark on the cycling world when she competed for Canada at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, after placing first at the Canadian Olympic trials.
Some of the most memorable accomplishments of Maria's cycling career include second place finishes at the National Road Racing championships in 1988, 1989 and 1990; and a third place finish in 1991.
Maria has been a resident of Banff since 1974. She graduated from Banff Community High School in 1980. She is also an accomplished cross country skier and mountain biker, and she can still be seen in the hills and valleys of the Bow Valley... going fast.
