Eliminating External Retailing
Enforcement againgst outdoor and
facade retailing is one area the
review team is seeking guidance on.
The review team is also using Phase 2 to seek direction from Council on enforcing against the practice of outdoor or facade retailing, except as allowed as part of an authorized special event. The review team believes that the outdoor exhibition of products tends to obscure architectural details of the building, inject a strong commercial element into the public realm, and arguably cheapens our commercial landscape.
While outdoor retailing activities are prohibited under the current Land Use Bylaw, the review team is seeking clear direction on delivering an education and enforcement campaign aimed at eliminating the practice, amongst the small minority of business operators engaged in external retailing.
