What is one-to-one tutoring?
Most volunteers find that one-to-one tutoring is a very rewarding experience. They have the satisfaction of helping someone to read and write - as well as sharing self-respect and a greater understanding of the world. Volunteer tutors meet weekly with their learners at a mutually agreed upon place and time, usually at the library.
Who are the learners?
Literacy/ESL (English as a Second Language) learners can be parents, employees, retirees, new Canadians. All of these learners have in common a desire to learn and a commitment to reach their learning goals
What is the time commitment?
Volunteer tutors meet weekly with their learning partners for 1 - 2 hour lessons. Volunteers are asked to attend monthly meetings, and to make a minimum 3 month commitment to help.
What are the qualifications for being a volunteer tutor?
All you need is time, an interest in reading, and a desire to help. You will receive training, materials, and other types of support.
