Bull Elk, Banff National Park by John E Marriott

Photography by John E. Marriott
"There are few things as impressive as watching the autumn elk rut in the Canadian Rockies. The giant bulls and their harems of cows gather in meadows around Banff from August until October. Each bull defends his territory from other bulls and any other animals that dare come close.
"Professional wildlife photographers like me have to be very careful around these big bulls. I always stay at least 100 metres away and use large telephoto lenses to photograph them.
"By staying back, it often allows me to get some beautiful scenery in the picture, like the aspen trees and the Fairholme Range of mountains in the background in this photograph."
