Background

Banff Recreation Centre Redevelopment Project

In April 2007, Banff Town Council gathered community input regarding options for re-developing,  replacing and/or relocating our community recreation centre. Thanks to all residents who completed the survey: A Recreation Centre for You, which was available online as well as at a Town Hall meeting.

The results of the information gathering and survey were presented to Town Council on May 14, 2007.
 
Here are some highlights from the findings, based on 284 responses:

• 85% agree the existing Banff Recreation Centre should be replaced
• 54% of respondents prefer the Elkwoods site for facility development, with 25% in support of developing or re-developing at the existing Banff Recreation Centre site.  Just 2% of respondents prefer development at the Recreation Grounds, or at the Industrial Compound or on High School lands
• two ice pads, six sheets of curling ice, a gymnasium, multipurpose program rooms, and fitness/wellness were identified as amenities most needed by 58% to 61% of respondents
• approximately 48% of respondents support the addition of a leisure pool and traditional pool
• 66% of respondents are in favour of a tax increase to build new recreation facilities
  

An earlier study in 2001 indicated that Banff residents were interested in an upgraded community recreation facility providing arena and curling ice, a weight room, gymnasium and fitness facilities, program and activity space, as well as a leisure pool.
