Programs Impacts during Construction

Q. What is happening with the current services and programs offered at the Banff Recreation Centre during construction?

A.  Schedule:

• Construction is scheduled to commence in May 2009.
• The building is closed to the public until mid to September 2009.
• Summer ice will not be available until 2011. 
• Curling has been cancelled for the 2009-2010 season and will resume again in October 2010.
• Local contract arena users are expected to access ice time commencing September 2009.
• Lobby, lounge and concession services will be unavailable during the 2009-2010 season with newly renovated areas expected to be available commencing fall 2010.
• With only one ice surface available for the 2009-2010 season, fewer public skating and shinny sessions are anticipated. 
• Concession service will resume fall 2010.

Q. Will an outdoor rink be included in the project?

A. Yes. Plans include outdoor rink construction on land north of the new curling rink (Mount Norquay side of the building) for the annual construction of a lighted, outdoor rink for use in December to March, weather permitting. A location for a temporary outdoor rink for the winter of 2009 – 2010 has not yet been determined.

Q. What is happening to the Skateboard Park?

A. A number of ramps and obstacles will be relocated to the west parking area of the Banff Recreation Grounds for 2009 and 2010 for free use.  The existing skateboard park site will be out of commission for the next two years functioning as part of the construction staging area.  The remaining equipment will be stored until operations resume at the Recreation Centre location in 2011 and will continue at this location until future facility development commences.  When that occurs, the skateboard park will move to another area at the Recreation Centre location.
