Framing of New Building at the Recreation Centre
Construction Project Report – January 21, 2010The Banff Recreation Centre renovation and expansion work is continuing. Curling rink walls have now been erected and the newly re-furbished glulam arches from the old curling rink were hoisted in place on Jan 20 and Jan 21.
Concourse framing is well underway - the reclaimed and re-furbished glulam beams from Laurence Grassi high Middle school in Canmore will provide a classic back drop for the spectacular views of Cascade Mountain, Whiskey Creek and 40 Mile Creek. Elevator shaft construction is complete and the framing for the new mezzanine area to the south of the existing arena has started.
In the new arena, foundation work is underway, two of the main structural block walls are complete and work on the new plant room will start in the coming weeks.
The construction site is being responsibly managed with regular site visits from an independent environmental consultant. To date 90% of the waste generated in the demolition of the existing facility and the construction of the new buildings has been diverted away from land fill - either by being re-used on site or by being separated and re-cycled for re-use in other construction projects.
Framing work and making the building weather tight will be the focus over the next few months as the team works hard towards the summer shut-down work of renovating the existing arena and installing the new electrical, mechanical and refrigeration systems.
