A New Look for Commercial Garbage Areas
|
For effective waste management, identify who will be responsible for ensuring that proper garbage and recycling occurs within your property.
Who shares your space?
Understand who else shares your current waste and recycling bins. Discuss with them how the waste and recycling utility may affect your current relationships and disposal practices.
It’s not all garbage?
Be sure you, your staff and those you share collection containers with understand Banff’s commercial waste and recycling categories, and what can be disposed of in each category. Take a look at the type and amount of garbage your business or facility generates to understand what waste items can be reduced, diverted for recycling or composting, and what materials are considered garbage. For example, discuss with your suppliers about how packaging can be reduced or returned for recycling to reduce your waste and recycling utility.
What containers will I need?
Think about how many containers and what size and type of container you will need for each separate category. How often will these containers need to be emptied? Under the new system, you will be charged for each pick-up.
Where will separated materials go?
Plan to have suitable storage space for each category of waste. If you are building or renovating, in your planning consider including enough storage space.
How do I build a waste enclosure?
The Land Use Bylaw defines a “Approved Enclosure” shall mean a type of enclosure designed for the storage of containers between collection times that prevents access to waste or recyclable waste by domestic animals and wildlife and the design and construction of which has been approved by the Development Office;
If a property wants to increase the number of bins they have and do not have space within either their building or an existing waste enclosure, they should make an appointment with the planning department to review their options for building an appropriate enclosure. If a property wants to increase their number of bins and do not have space within either their building or an existing waste enclosure, they should make an appointment with the planning department to review their options for building an appropriate enclosure.
You are also encouraged to talk to a neighbouring property and see if you can place your waste in their bin and share the cost of having the bin emptied.
Selecting service options
Fill out the services selection form by referring to this guide and the proposed rate structure information to select a service option that suits your business.
Learn from one another
Talk to other operators and learn what they have done or are considering doing to manage their waste separation. Invite a representative of the Town of Banff’s waste transition team to drop by. We can make a brief presentation to your staff to answer their questions and explain why this approach is important. We can also assess your needs and offer suggestions.
What if I produce a low volume of waste or recyclables (cardboard)?
If the property produces a very low volume of any or all waste streams, it is not mandatory that they subscribe for the minimum, once a week service. There are several options available for properties in this situation. Talk to a neighbouring property and see if you can place your waste in their bin and share the cost of having the bin emptied.Bring your waste to the transfer station and pay a reduced rate for disposal.Store your waste until the bin is full and then call for a single pick up.
Who do I call?
Call the transition team for more information so you can plan in advance and choose the best cost structure. Learn more about how the new waste and recycling utility will be initiated and how it will affect you and your business.
