Town of Banff Fact Sheet
The Town of Banff is one of only two municipalities within a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Home to 8,721, we host approximately 3 million guests each year.
As a base camp to Banff National Park, ours is a community rooted in park values. The Town became a municipality in 1990. And although we have grown considerably since Banff was first discovered in the 1880s, our community has embraced an aggressive growth management plan as a means to preserve our unique small town.
The footprint of the Town of Banff is just 3.93 km2 and we will never be bigger. This means:
Everything is just 10 minutes away -- maximum. And you can walk or ride anywhere.
Our footprint is small, so we optimize the space we have to provide all of the amenities necessary in a thriving tourist community.
We share this land well with wildlife in the park.
We will always have the charm of a small town.
The total allowable commercial space in Banff is 3.8 million sq feet – just 10% of our townsite.
Our population will not exceed 10,000 and all residents must meet the federal regulation of ‘need to reside’, which means individuals must be employed in the town in order to live here.
