In July 2011, council directed staff to pursue replacement of the sanitary pipes crossing the Bow River with a new pedestrian bridge and utility crossing.Today, Council directed staff to commit to a design-build contract with StructureCraft Builders Inc. Next, staff will hold a public open house in the beginning of February to collect public input on the design of the bridge, particularly where the bridge meets the river banks.
Once the contract is in place staff will initiate the permitting process, which includes submitting an application to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA). The permitting process will take about six months and will include a two-week period when the public can forward concerns.
Après-Ski Initiative
The Banff Lake Louise Marketing Committee forwarded a number of requests to council to help support the après-ski experience. The après-ski experience is one of three initiatives the committee has come up with to encourage winter visitation.Council agreed to:
- Permit the installation of a maximum of six locking ski racks on downtown sidewalks during the rest of this winter season then again next winter.
- Consider purchasing and installing outdoor speakers and wiring to play centrally controlled music on Banff Avenue and Bear Street next winter.
- Look into the feasibility of allow outdoor fire pits on Banff Avenue and Bear Street.
- Look into setting up a tobbogan run in the winter of 2013.
Community Art Committee
The Community Art Committee welcomes a new public member, Sonja Purcell. Sonja was appointed today by council and will serve on the committee until October 2014.Council's next regular meeting is on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. The agenda package will be posted by 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 9.
