Background: Banff Refreshing
November 1, 2005Banff refreshing represents an investment to enhance downtown Banff. The work is scheduled to take place from April through October in 2007. The result will be a streetscape that is more reflective of our natural environment – more trees, more places to sit or rest, more space for walking, window shopping, enjoying outdoor cafes and the spectacular scenery.
Outcomes of Banff refreshing on the 100 and 200 Blocks of Banff Avenue:
- An enhanced downtown pedestrian space including:
- Wider sidewalks (approximately twice the width they are now)
- Sidewalks will have a textured, non-slip surface and will be bordered by green precast pavers
- Transit bays will appear in each block to allow buses to stop safely
- Automobile pick up/drop off bays will be placed at intervals along both sides of Banff Avenue
- Enhanced crosswalks at intersections and mid-block
- 20 additional benches (from 26 to 46)
- 24 additional planters (from 11 to 35)
- The planting of additional native trees including: White Spruce, Trembling Aspen and Paper Birch
- The addition of large rundlestone boulders at the edges of landscaped areas to provide informal seating opportunities
- Enhanced custom, high efficiency light fixtures that evenly add white light throughout the 100 and 200 blocks
- Improved traffic signals that are easier to see
- Improved street/directional signage to help visitors find their way around
- Distinctly designed street furnishings and fixtures that reflect elements of the surrounding mountain landscape
- Replacement of all water mains, sanitary sewage collection mains and the storm sewer system
- Replacement of the water and sewer service connections
- New asphalt paved streets designed for a minimum 20-year life span
