FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Banff Avenue to reopen for winter
Banff, AB - Just after noon, Monday, Dec. 3 the 100 and 200 blocks of Banff Avenue will once again be open to traffic. To commemorate the opening, and completion of the 2007 phase of the $22.8 million project to refresh downtown, Town of Banff Mayor, John Stutz will take an inaugural drive at 1 p.m. sharp.Contractor, Standard General, has replaced century-old infrastructure and reconstructed the streetscape to better profile Banff’s natural surroundings, making the downtown more pedestrian friendly and enjoyable for residents and visitors. Spring 2008 will see Standard General back in Banff to complete the landscaping, final concrete work and final lift of asphalt on Banff Avenue.
"We are really pleased with the progress made on Refreshing this year. Town of Banff staff and our contractors have gone above and beyond to keep this initiative on track," says Town Manager, Robert Earl.
"Although the project is not scheduled for completion until next year, we are already enjoying the benefits of our wider sidewalks, enhanced lighting and seating."
Banff Avenue has been closed to vehicles since July 18. With the opening, new traffic signals will be active, including advance green arrows for turning at Caribou, Wolf and Buffalo streets. The Town will be monitoring intersections, and seeking public comment on how the new vehicular routes are working.
