FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Banff Community Plan receives final approval
Banff, AB – Today the Mayor of Banff, John Stutz, announced federal approval of the revised Banff Community Plan."The Town of Banff is very pleased that the Federal Minister of the Environment has endorsed the updated Banff Community Plan," says Mayor Stutz. "We are excited to now be able to move forward to implement the goals and objectives of the plan."
The revised plan has met a series of conditions imposed by the Minister of the Environment to ensure the integrity of the Banff National Park Management Plan. "We are pleased with the quality of work the Town of Banff put into this new Community Plan, enabling us to recommend it for ministerial approval," says Banff Field Unit Superintendent Kevin Van Tighem. "This is a plan that will build on Banff's well-earned reputation as a model of environmental sustainability in the heart of Canada's first National Park and the Canadian Rockies’ World Heritage Site."
Mayor Stutz is grateful to everyone involved in the review process. "The plan could not have been completed without the dedication and efforts of the Banff Community Plan Steering Committee and countless hours that the residents of Banff devoted to expressing their views and vision for the future of this spectacular town," he says. "It is an excellent document and provides very clear policy direction that outlines the community’s values and vision for the future, all of which are consistent with the Banff National Park Management Plan."
The Banff Community Plan is the primary long-range planning document for the Town of Banff. Originally adopted in 1998, the plan was revised in 2007 after an extensive 11-month public review.
The revised Banff Community Plan reaffirms the core vision and guiding principles of the original plan. It also examines relevant issues such as how Banff will prosper within the finite limits of growth, future infrastructure requirements, municipal financing and social planning. The updated plan strengthens the concept of sustainability in terms of environmental protection, social and cultural progress and economic prosperity.
