New community measures report charts Banff’s progress in key sectors
Banff, AB - A new, web-based monitoring report, which tracks the community of Banff’s progress in key sectors, was launched by the Town of Banff this week.
The new report, called Community Measures, is an accounting of community-wide progress made on achieving the vision and goals articulated in the Banff Community Plan, adopted by Council in 2009, in three focus areas of environment, community and economy.
“We are committed to achieving our vision and the goals established in the Community Plan,” said Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen. “By monitoring our progress, we know if we are on track, or if we must adjust our behaviour as a community, and adjust our service as a government, to become the community we wish to be.”
Community Measures tracks items such as waste generated, potable water consumed, transit ridership, visitation, and reinvestment in infrastructure. More indicators will be added as data becomes available. As it’s the first year of the report, some of the indicators provide baseline information from which the Town can determine trends in the future. As a graphic web report, residents and stakeholders can easily access it online whenever needed.
Given Banff’s unique situation as a tourism community within a national park, a visitor-adjusted population was used to track many indicators. While the permanent population is about 9,000, Banff receives more than 3 million visitors annually, which significantly impacts usage rates in many indicators. Generally, performance trends in 2009 were positive— transit use was up, waste hauled to the landfill was down and more business licenses were issued.
