Sharrows Point the Way

Sharrows connect the streets of Banff to the Trans Canada Trail
Banff, AB - Thanks to a grant from the Trans Canada Trail and Alberta TrailNet Society, cyclists have more help navigating around the town of Banff.
Town staff recently installed shared right-of-way road markings, called sharrows, to help cyclists navigate easily through town between the Banff Legacy Trail and the Spray trailhead, effectively completing the gap in the Trans Canada Trail between its entry and exit points in Banff. The project was fully funded by Trans Canada Trail and the Alberta TrailNet Society.
The route runs along the northeast end of Banff Avenue, as well as Muskrat Street, Buffalo Street, Glen Avenue, and Spray Avenue between the Legacy Trail and Spray Trailhead. Trans Canada Trail markers will be added to the route within the next few weeks.
Sharrows identify recommended cycling routes and help position cyclists for the safest and most efficient shared use of the road. The markings also alert drivers to the potential presence of cyclists on the road and guide them away from the outside edge of the driving lane, allowing space for cyclists. Other sharrows installed in the spring link the Legacy Trail and Vermilion Lakes Drive, and mark a safe route to the Elementary School via Buffalo and Lynx Streets for children from the south side of town. Signs advising “Bicycle Route” and “Share the Road” have also been installed on all sharrow routes.
The Trans Canada Trail, the world’s longest network of multi-use trails, currently stretches 16,500 kms, from coast to coast to coast, linking thousands of communities. Opened July 30, the Banff Legacy Trail portion of the Trail connects Banff with Canmore. Visit www.tctrail.ca for more information.
The Town of Banff is located in the heart of Banff National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are home to over 8,700 residents and greet more than three million visitors each year. For more details on Banff’s bike friendly programs, visit www.banff.ca.
