Engineering Coordinator

Originally hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Michel had many adventures throughout Canada before putting down roots in Canmore; proving you don’t have to be a Banffite to be a Townie.  After leaving the east behind, Michel spread his wings in Yellowknife working in the construction and mining industries, then moved to Edmonton where he completed his Engineering diploma between NAIT and SAIT.

Michel headed south in 1988 to Calgary, performing contract work in construction, and when it came time to raise a family he went just down the road to Canmore.  By this time Michel was working in project management at the Calgary Zoo – living with the wild animals of the Bow Valley and working alongside the exotics in the city.

Michel joined the ‘animals’ at the Town of Banff in 2001, and has continued to enjoy everything the valley has to offer – especially cross-country skiing with his family.

What it’s like at work?

• Your day is diverse, from being the lead on projects, to preparing technical drawings, tenders for streets, and supervision of streets, sewer and water capital projects. 
• To update council on project information or suggestions on new initiatives, you occasionally prepare reports and make presentations.
• You are often out on the streets, conducting topographic and construction surveys for both capital and public works construction projects.
• You are involved with the annual budget by preparing estimates of capital projects for the preparation of department annual and long range budgets.
• Your skills may also be utilized in the design and preparation of construction plans for in-house projects such as minor sewer and water upgrades.
• Another task would be in records management of as-builts, providing record plan information to internal and customer requests, maintaining catalogue and files related to capital and development infrastructure plans in both manual and electronic formats.
• Since working for the Town is all about the public, you assist in responses to public inquiries and complaints related to the department’s activities and programs, as well as liaising with external clients, including the preparation and coordination of street use permits and utility company line assignments.
• As part of the Engineering team you work closely with the Operations departments in providing technical expertise to on-call staff in public works emergency situations.
• You also assist in the preparation of monthly reports on the progress of capital and current programs and projects, including expenditures-to-date.
  

What are the role requirements?

• A two-year technical diploma in an Engineering Technology (preferably Civil Engineering).
• A minimum of five years of directly related experience.
• A valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s License.
• Working knowledge of MS Office programs.
• Well-developed communications skills, both oral and written.
