Supporting Council's Priorities
Unauthorized removal of refundable containers
It's illegal to removed refundable containers from Town-owned waste bins.Council has asked us to help reduce this practice, so we’ve increased our patrols of public waste and recycling bins. Already our efforts have resulted in a decrease in people illegally removing refundables.
Illegal Dumping
Illegal dumping is when people leave items other than bagged grass and leaves on public property. Yes! It is illegal to leave items next to garbage bins. Council wants to reduce the incidence of illegal dumping because:- It’s ugly. Banff is one of the most beautiful places in the world, yet statistics show our incidence of illegal dumping to be about 4 times higher than other Alberta municipalities.
- It can be dangerous. Animals are often attracted to waste left outside, and broken glass and other hazards are often present.
- It’s expensive. Our garbage trucks are equipped to pick up garbage from bins, not large items like furniture and electronic equipment. The Town sends out a separate truck and crew to pick up the garbage left illegally beside bins. This costs taxpayers an extra $60,000 per year.
- Dispose of your unwanted items responsibly. There are several options – visit our Unwanted Items page for more information.
- Give us a call if you see someone illegally dumping – 403.762.1218.
