Infrastructure Management is a business process and decision making framework based on the combination of management, financial, economic, engineering, operational and other practices applied to physical assets with the objective of providing the required level of service in the most cost effective manner.
Geographical Information System (GIS) and Infrastructure Management
A GIS system captures, stores, analyses, manages and presents data that is linked to
a spatial location. GIS is a business solution that merges cartography and databases. The infrastructure data stored into the Town's GIS is the main source of information for the Town's Infrastructure Management.
Tangible Capital Assets (TCA) and Infrastructure Management
Every municipality in Canada now has to report on the historical cost, amoritization expense and accumulated amoritization. TCA is a great base to develop Infrastructure Management from. The ultimate goal of Infrastructure Mangement is to find a response to the below questions. That information will allow us to make better cost effective decisions regarding the Town's infrastructure.
What do you own?
How much is it worth?
What condition is it in?
What is the deferred maintenance?
What is the remaining service life?
What actions to take and when?
