Maps & GIS
| An interactive Town of Banff basemap. The Town of Banff participates in the ESRI Community Maps program. |
Town of Banff GIS (Geographic Information System) creates and maintains well over 200 different layers of geographic information.
A small sample of the GIS layers maintained by the Town of Banff include property lines, street centre lines, hydrant locations, building outlines, water and sewer main locations, contour lines, trail and pathways, the list goes on and on.
How is the GIS system used?
A GIS system can be used to create attractive paper maps available to the public as well as Town staff. However the real power of a GIS system is it's ability to store, query, and analyse the different layers of information and how they might relate to each other.
As well, the information within a GIS can be shared with others through the use of online mapping tools and 'mashups'. An example would be the Town's on-line Pet Connect application as well as the Streetlight Reporting tool. These online services available 24 hours a day to Banff residents and visitors help to improve service and reduce costs.
A joint effort between the Town's Engineering, Operations and GIS Departments enables the development of an infrastructure management program. GIS technology is used as a decision making tool to maintain and replace the Town's infrastructure in a cost effective manner while providing the right level of service.
GIS publishes frequently requested maps, and we make them available at a reasonable cost. We will also design custom maps at an hourly rate. Visit our map gallery for examples of maps that are available.
The GIS Department has created several interactive maps for our community and visitors to utilize. Make sure you try out our new viewers displaying accommodations, attractions, restaurants, hiking trails, and parking and recycling locations.
