Alberta Health Care
Be aware of your coverage
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) provides basic health services and hospitalization coverage. It does NOT cover the cost of prescriptions, ambulance service, or routine dental care. Each province in Canada has its own health care plan. If you are from another province, ensure that your coverage is effective in Alberta. In general, your home province covers you for three months after you leave home. If you are a Canadian citizen, you can obtain Alberta Health Care coverage once you have lived in Alberta for three months.
You are eligible for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage on the first day of the third month following your date of arrival. You should register before the first day of the fourth month after you arrive. If you apply later, the effective date of your coverage will be determined when you register.
If you are planning to be temporarily out of your home province longer than three months, contact your provincial health plan to see if they’ll cover you while you’re away.
For more information or to apply: call toll free 310.0000, then 780.427.1432.
For group coverage: call 1.800.565.7483 or talk to the human resources department at your place of employment.
For full-time students 21 years and younger who are not married or working full time, AHCIP coverage can be maintained through their parents. For students who are 21 - 25 years of age, written verification from the school in which they are enrolled is required to maintain coverage by a parent. For those from other countries, please call AHCIP at 310.0000.
To supplement your health care coverage, check with your employer for your company’s benefit package, or call Blue Cross at 1.800.661.6995. To obtain Blue Cross coverage, you must already have AHCIP.
