Pay Scales

Minimum wage in Alberta:

$8.80/hour (effective April 1 2009)

Entry level positions:

Start at minimum wage and range upwards to approx. $15.00/hour

Examples:
Bartender/Server/Hostess/Buser- Pay Range:   $9.00 - $10.00 per hour plus Gratuities

Kitchen Apprentice and/or First Cook  - Pay Range:  $10.00 -$15.00 per hour

Cashier - Pay Range:  $8.50 -$15 per hour in many retail establishments. The starting wage for cashiers is at or just above minimum wage. Job benefits may include merchandise discounts.

Day Camp Leader - Pay Range:  $10.00 - $15.00 per hour.

Front Desk Agent- Pay range: $9.00-14.00 per hour, depending on experience and employer.

Housekeeper - Pay Range:  $8.50 -$14.00 per hour, depending on amount experience and level of commitment to a property.

Retail Sales Associate - Pay Range:  $8.50 – $14.00 per hour. If the store offers commissions, the potential exists to exceed this wage range.

Supervisory or experienced positions:

Depends on experience. Range from $9.00/hour to $17.00/hour

Examples:
Bus Driver - Pay Range:  $9.00 -  $16.00 per hour (plus gratuities in some cases)

Child Care Worker - Pay Range: $9.00 - $12.00 per hour depending on position and experience

Food Services Supervisor - Pay Range:  $9.00 - $13.63 per hour depending on the experience of the supervisor and the type and or size of the food service operation

Raft Guide - Pay Range: From $80.00 - $140.00 per day depending on experience plus some companies offer bonuses (e.g. $ 5 per day bonus) and Staff accommodation at a low cost may be available White-water rafting guides are self-employed or employed by specialty companies in river rafting. Many outdoor sport and recreation guides work from May to October and find other employment during the winter months.

General Gardener / Equipment Operator - Pay Range:  $9.50 -  $11.50 per hour.

Construction Worker - Pay Range: $12.00 - $20.00 per hour (depends on experience) plus overtime

Management positions or high level positions:

Depend on on experience and can be wage or salary.

Examples:

Chef - Pay Range: Salaries for chefs vary a great deal, depending on the size and location of the establishment, volume of business and the chef's reputation.

Food Services Manager - Pay Range:  $22,000 – $48,000 salaries per year depending on the experience of the manager and the type and or size of the food service operation

Mountain Guide - Pay Range:  $200.00 – $400.00 per day plus gratuities in some cases however there are many “down” days where there is no work available, especially in the “shoulder seasons”.

Other factors to take note of:

Commissions are common within the retail sector.

Tips range on average between 5-20% and are common within the restaurant and other service sectors.

Job offers may be accompanied by other benefits not available in other communities. A large number of businesses offer staff accommodation at rates that range in price. Also, if a hotel or a restaurant employs you, subsidized meals may be a benefit of employment.  Other perks may include ski passes if your job is in the ski industry, shuttle transportation or social clubs that offer activities at a reduced cost.  Some companies have low cost fitness memberships or access to spas or gym facilities available to their staff.
