2021 Special Events Policy Review

The Town of Banff has updated its Special Events Policy in 2021.

The new Special Events Policy C5001-1 was approved by Town Council on October 4, 2021.


  • Proposed Policy changes were presented to the Governance and Finance Committee of council in 2020. Although the policy was last updated in 2018, an early review was required to address gaps in the policy that created challenges in selecting the third-party operated Farmers Market. 
  • In October 2020, the Governance & Finance Committee of council provided recommendations for changes to the proposed amendments.
  • On November 9, 2020, Administration was directed to consult with stakeholders on the proposed changes to the policy.
  • The Bow Valley Naturalists and Banff & Lake Louise Tourism provided recommendations to Town Administration.
  • A meeting on April 19, 2021, with local event organizers and other stakeholders reviewed the proposed changes and discussed other suggestions.
  • On September 13, 2021, a report was provided to Governance and Finance Committee of council outlining all proposed changes. 
  • On September 27, a report on proposed changes and the draft new policy was to be presented to council for review and possible adoption. The report was deferred to the October 4, 2021, meeting.
