Recycling Plastic and Metal Containers

Mixed ContainersMost kinds of plastic containers, metal food cans, milk jugs and drink containers can be recycled in the mixed containers bin, as listed below.

Plastic Recycling

  • Look for a recycling symbol with the number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 in the middle. These plastics can be recycled in a mixed container bin.
  • Common items include: Margarine, ice cream, yogurt containers, ketchup, shampoo bottles, etc.

To prepare: Remove non-plastic lids and rinse all containers.

Metal Food Can Recycling

  • Fruit cups, ribbed food cans, aerosol cans and other small pieces of metal such as pie plates

To prepare: Rinse cans before they're recycled.

Do Not Place the Following in the Mixed Container Bins: 

  • RecyclingPlastic bags (they can be dropped off at grocery stores)
  • Non-beverage Tetra Paks (e.g., soup)
  • Plastic containers without a recycling symbol
  • Toxic product containers
  • Polystyrene/Styrofoam
  • Stretchy plastic such as Plastic film, wrap, or cellophane packaging
  • Stand up plastic pouches (e.g. for soups, snacks, frozen foods)
