Banff, AB – The Town of Banff, in collaboration with Sun Country Highway, has installed the Town’s first municipal-owned, publicly accessible electric vehicle charger in the Bear Street Parkade.
The EV charger is one of five in Banff; the Banff Springs Hotel has two chargers also accessible by public, while the Banff Park Lodge and Best Western Siding 29 each have one for their patrons. Banff now has the most EV chargers per capita in Alberta.
The EV chargers are part of a larger network installed by Sun Country Highway, whose mission is to green Canada's highways from coast to coast. It's possible to drive an electric vehicle from Newfoundland to Victoria, says Sun Country Highway Vice President Christopher Misch. All Sun Country Highway charging stations offer free charging; the electricity is provided by the host of the location. It costs as little as a stamp and an envelope to recharge the average electric vehicle on the road today.
“The Town of Banff is thrilled to be a part of Sun Country Highway’s green network," said Mayor Karen Sorensen, while launching the new charger and test driving a Tesla Roadster. "Encouraging the use of alternative modes of transportation to tour Banff reflects our commitment to preserve our national park environment for future generations. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the continent in their electric vehicles.” She thanked Sun Country Highway, who donated the recharger to the Town.
“Banff is already a popular tourist destination, but now the municipality has taken new strides toward a greener tomorrow, allowing travelers to drive electric vehicles to Banff, emission free," added Misch. "I applaud the Town’s commitment to the environment and for helping to promote sustainable forms of transportation.”
Sun Country Highway is a wholly Canadian owned company focused on creating Canada's electric vehicle infrastructure. This year, Sun Country Highway, in partnership with over 100 municipalities and hundreds of leading businesses, has set a goal to expand their EV charging network so that 90 per cent of the Canadian population is accessible by electric vehicle.
