[ARCHIVED] Parking fines increase

Disobeying the Town's traffic bylaw could cost you more. Council approved an increase in fines for parking tickets for time infractions to $50, the first increase in fine amounts in nearly a decade. The increase takes effect Monday, July 8, 2013.

But if ticket holders pay the fine within seven days, the fine amount is reduced to $30. The Town offers online payment of tickets at banff.ca/payonline. The fines for all other general parking and pedestrian infractions will be $55, an increase of $5. The fine for skateboarding infractions, such as adult skating on sidewalks or down Tunnel Mountain Road, will increase to $100 to match the similar offence of adult cycling on a sidewalk.

A recent survey showed that the fine amount in Banff for time limit infractions was 40 per cent lower than the average of the 16 other municipalities in Alberta and B.C. For other, non time- limit related fines, the same survey showed Banff fines were 11 per cent below the average.

Parking is free in Banff on streets and in public lots, and time limits vary, but generally, parking in the downtown area ranges from two to five hours, to encourage turnover and increase capacity for visitors. To find parking easily, visit banffparking.ca.
