Video monitoring at Banff Recreation Grounds helps maintain public health orders

Rec Ground Surveillance

To help ensure Alberta Health orders on physical distancing requirements are being met and remind residents on the restrictions on gatherings of more than 15 people, the Town of Banff has temporarily installed video cameras at three locations. Town enforcement staff will periodically use the live video stream to supplement patrols of the picnic area, the basketball court and the skateboard park.

“We recognize the importance of being outdoors for the physical and mental well-being of everyone, but we need to ensure that safety measures are being followed and are taken seriously to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 in Banff,” said Silvio Adamo, Director of Emergency Management for the Town of Banff and its Emergency Coordination Centre.

“This temporary measure will help to ensure residents are working together, while apart, to keep our community safe.”

The cameras will be removed and deployed to replace aging traffic cameras as soon as COVID restrictions are lifted.

The Town of Banff is planning to re-open the skateboard park, as soon as health measures and supervisors are in place to ensure safe use of the facility. The reopening is planned for early May.

The Recreation Grounds washrooms and sports fields remain open, but residents are reminded to avoid activities where people will gather, potentially come in contact or within 2 metres, or share equipment or passing a ball. The Town is working with Alberta Health Services to provide information that would allow people to safely pursue activities, with special measures.

Large portions of the sports fields at the Recreation Grounds will be under construction this summer for redevelopment of new features and enhancements.
