A new energy efficiency retrofit at the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre will reduce the electricity consumption of the lighting systems, saving tax dollars and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project replaced around 300 lights with LED fixtures in areas including the curling rink, curling lounge and two ice arenas. The new lights not only save energy, but the new programmable, dimmable fixtures also improve flexibility to fit the wide variety of events hosted in the facility.
The project aims to save an estimated $18,900 from the Fenlands’ annual utility bill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 89 tonnes per year; which helps the Town of Banff get one step closer to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050.
“We are continually improving the efficiency of our municipal facilities through energy conservation measures, equipment retrofits and renewable energy projects,” said Banff Mayor Corrie DiManno. “The Town of Banff is serious about reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and walking the talk on steps to tackle climate change and environmental protection leadership, fitting of Canada’s first national park.”
This $200,000 project received more than $151,500 of funding through the Municipal Climate Action Centre as part of their Recreation Energy Conservation Program.
“The Town of Banff is making great headway on their greenhouse gas reduction goals and we’re proud to be a part of their strategy. This new project will reduce their electricity usage and costs, while ensuring the Fenland Recreation Centre is well-lit and comfortable for users,” said Trina Innes, Executive Director, Sustainability Services, for Alberta Municipalities.
The Municipal Climate Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. The Recreation Energy Conservation Program provided financial rebates to Alberta municipalities that carry out energy efficiency retrofits at recreation facilities; the program is currently fully subscribed.
