[ARCHIVED] Pedestrian bridge detours beside sewer rehab work

Sewer Rehab map News

The Town of Banff is extending the life expectancy of the backup sewer system that is located under the bed of the Bow River, beside the Muskrat Street Pedestrian Bridge. The two pipes are used if there’s an issue with the pump station or main line, which is suspended under the Muskrat Street Pedestrian Bridge. The back-up contingency pipes are used to prevent overflow into the river.

The pipes will be lined with high-density polyethylene to prevent corrosion and extend their life expectancy by 50 years. This work to re-line the pipes will occur through October.

In addition, in November, a barrier of rocks and stones will also be constructed downstream of the pipes to prevent water erosion and reduce the chance the pipes become uncovered. This layer of new riverbed will provide additional protection from large debris that may be carried downstream.

Work will take place throughout October and November 2023 to take advantage of both low sanitary flowrates and low water levels.

Detours and Closures

The Muskrat Street Pedestrian Bridge will be closed on specific dates for the safety of all pedestrians and cyclists. There will be detours in place during those periods:

  • October 2-6 (Closure cancelled - Bridge to remain open)
  • October 23-27
  • November dates are to be determined following the completion of the pipe re-lining

More details and regular updates will be available at the project page: banff.ca/SewerRehab
