On Tuesday, April 2, AltaLink discovered a problem with a piece of equipment at its Banff substation that required immediate action to ensure the safety and security of the supply of electricity in the area. The information available at the time indicated that a power outage was urgently required to complete the necessary repairs that would affect the Banff townsite, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise. The outage was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the repair was expected to take approximately 30 minutes before the power could be restored. In an attempt to provide as much notice as possible to residents and businesses, AltaLink communicated this information to the Town of Banff and businesses in the Lake Louise area.
After arriving on site, AltaLink crews identified they needed more time than originally anticipated to safely plan and work through technical issues before beginning the outage. As a result, the outage was delayed until approximately 6:45 p.m. and lasted until 8 p.m. At this time it also became apparent that the outage was not going to affect Banff, but only the areas west of Banff, including Sunshine and Lake Louise.
We understand the impact to residents and businesses in Banff that adjusted their operations in anticipation of the outage. We appreciate your patience as we worked to ensure the safe and reliable supply of electricity to Banff.
