Hear author Megan Epler Wood speak about Sustainable Tourism on a Finite Planet on Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Banff Centre's Max Bell Auditorium.
According to the UNWTO, tourism accounted for 10% of the global economy in 2016 and is projected to continue increasing 4% or more annually until 2030. Can the increase in out-bound travel be reconciled with the pressures placed on developing countries to enhance their tourism offerings? How will this global growth impact mature tourism destinations, particularly those in protected areas? Epler Wood lays out an integrated vision for sustainable tourism that calls on public and private sector decision-makers to assess the current and future value of natural, social and cultural capital to guide investments in destinations and protect vital resources.
Megan Epler Wood is Principal of EplerWood International (EWI) which for 15 years has led global consulting teams to provide innovative systems for business, NGOs and governments to build competitive resource efficient economies that benefit all members of society. Epler Wood teaches three courses on sustainable and ecotourism in the global online graduate program in Sustainability at Harvard Extension School. She was an NGO
leader and a founder in the field of ecotourism from 1990-2002.
This is a free presentation sponsored by the Town of Banff, Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, and the Banff & Lake Louise Hospitality Association.
