Throughout this fall and coming winter, Parks Canada will be selectively removing and/or limbing vegetation near infrastructure in both the frontcountry and backcountry areas of Banff National Park.
Why?
The safety of the public, our crews, park infrastructure, and neighbouring lands is always our top priority. Reducing the accumulation of forest vegetation lowers the risk of wildland fire to both park infrastructure and the town of Banff.
What You Need to Know:
- Areas of work this fall and winter will include:
- Near the town of Banff: St. Julien Road, Middlesprings, the Juniper Hotel, Rocky Mountain Resort, the Rimrock Resort
- Near the Bow Valley Parkway: Castle Mountain Chalets, Johnston Canyon Resort
- Near Highway 93S: Storm Mountain Lodge
- Other backcountry locations: Shadow Lake Lodge, Sundance Lodge, Halfway Hut
- Impacts of fuel management work will include some noise and temporary closures.
- Debris from these operations will be removed or burned on site. Burning will be planned during times with good venting conditions to reduce smoke.
- Residents with extreme smoke sensitivity can be added to a notification list by contacting pc.banff.fireinfo-infofeu.banff.pc@canada.ca.
Wildlife corridors
This fall and winter, Parks Canada will be burning piles of vegetation that have been removed from wildlife corridors and wildlife travel routes.
Why?
This work is done in an effort to reduce wildlife injury, mortality, and human-wildlife conflict around human use areas and transportation corridors.
What You Need to Know:
- Areas of work include: north of the town of Banff, near the Sunshine Road/Trans-Canada Interchange, and along the Bow Valley Parkway (highway 1A).
- Impacts of fuel management work will include some noise
- Debris from these operations will be removed or burned on site. Burning will be planned during times with good venting conditions to reduce smoke.
- Residents with extreme smoke sensitivity can be added to a notification list by contacting pc.banff.fireinfo-infofeu.banff.pc@canada.ca.
